Serpents and Doves

Introduction

In a world that is mostly uncertain when it comes to the dealings of men, it comforts me to know that Christ is on his throne. How would it be for us if he wasn’t? Must worse I assure you. In the face of these days we have a hope that grants us peace that is beyond all understanding which in due time yields a fruitful harvest of eternal life. It is abundant life granted to those who are in the ark of Christ weathering the stormy waves we currently find ourselves upon. The good life is in Christ, among his people who are awaiting his return day and night. The good life is now and not yet.

The Bible says we are to be as wise as serpents and innocent as doves (Matt. 10:16). This is in the context of Jesus sending out his disciples as sheep among wolves. I hear some howling if you follow me.

Wisdom and Innocence

Wisdom and innocence are qualities of the Christian. I cannot but think of the doves like that of David who did have his wings dipped in blood since he was after all, a warrior king; but his wisdom helped him slither past much more battle than we may realize. He found his dominance upon the battle field, blessed by God, and given the kingdom of Israel because he was a man after God’s own heart. He had to be wise to lead the people of Israel. Wisdom told him to trust God. It is true that even the wise sometimes fall, but the truly wise know who to go to for forgiveness. David fell and David repented (Psalm 51).

David fled for his life and defended his people at many turns. I can see how it would benefit a man to join those valiant souls who’s wings are dipped, especially if it comes to defending my own country and especially my family. Wisdom would tell us there is a time flee and a time to kill and a time for mercy. There is a time to slither past a conflict that would only harm further and there is a time to coil, a time to strike, and a time to sink our fangs into the neck of those who would do harm to those we love.

War: Ukraine and Russia

There is a war brewing in the east and the people of Ukraine are feeling the hot breath of Russian advancement. May they fight like crazy to defend themselves and may we pray for them and Russia too. There are real saints of God who are caught up on both sides in all of the turmoil taking place there who would rather have peace, but there is no peace. It would be easy to rise, take up our keyboard and say what we think would be best. But a fool answers a matter before he hears it (Prov. 18:13). I do not pretend to know all about what is going on with this war, but I do know God. What we can do now is trust God by keeping ourselves unstained from the world (James 1:27). No matter what we think is going on in Ukraine, there is what actually is going on and if anything the last two years has taught us is to consider the source.

Many men and women use the act of war to line their pockets with crumbled dollars. That fact is nothing new under the sun. I can’t say exactly how things are lining up, but I do feel like there is a bread trail of dollars that leads to the real reason Russia wants to take Ukraine. Follow the money. It tells the tale. Ukraine is rich in resources and land mass and is no doubt a savory temptation for Putin, but American economic ties to Russia concerning oil is a big problem. All I can say is I would much rather spend four dollars for a gallon of gas if I knew it was provided to me by the oil stained hands of an American. Being too dependent upon the faulty dealings of other countries could very well become the demise of this great one in which I live. And printing more money will do about as good as saying I can go buy my next hot meal with a roll of toilet paper. We all know that is only good for one thing no matter how many rolls the package claims each roll to be equal to.

Trust God

Do excuse my musings this evening. I am simply one man with my own opinion who you might say such an opinion could see the use of a dollar or two since everyone seems to have those; opinions I mean. Whatever the case we must be children of God who put to good use the Word which he gave us. There is a guide through all of this and that guide must have our finger prints and eyes scattered all over it. In that Word are truths that will make us wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Read, believe, and live.
